THEY is a book that portrays an utopian society where there are no gender expectations.

Premises

At the beginning of the 4 days workshop, I interviewed young peoples from all around the world, and asked them about their representation of gender. Their answers defined my concept for this book.

Gender is fluid and defines by the society you live in. A lady from Indonesia doesn’t have the same representation of being a woman as a lady from France. You can be a boy in a woman’s body. You can be a woman and masculine. Everything is possible and there are no frontiers.

Editorial concept

The book is bound from the middle so that there is no ‘border’ nor order. There is no top or bottom, no left or right: reading is circular. Because it is not an easily approachable subject it was important for me to engage the readers into active reading, making them manipulate the object, even struggle with it a bit as a curiosity raiser.

Illustration system

Because it was a 4 days workshop I had to develop a system of illustrations that wouldn’t take too much time to create while being visually powerful and representative of the concept. I used photography as a base and re-draw everything on illustrator and, while experimenting, I realized that gradient makes dull colors appear more juicy by associating them with each other.
