During my shameful (not so shameful) years as a weeb teen obsessed with anime and shojo manga, I naturally progress into the internet ladder of life to reach my final form: a k-pop stan. Since then I developed a vivid passion for Korean culture: especially music, design, movies & food. When my typography teacher gave us the assignment to create a monospaced typeface I took this opportunity to think of a concept that would bridge their culture and my own. Un-fortunately I don't understand Korean so the words always look like illustrative shapes which, I thought, was an interesting approach to typography. My idea was to re-create this feeling with a Latin alphabet.
Japjong is designed as a display font, very bold and strange. For the specimen, I decided to create moving posters inspired by Korean music. Each poster has their own musical identity and moves with the rhythm of the song. The intention was to show that the typeface could merge visually with actual Hangeul.
